Make time for what you love

Time… its probably the most expensive asset in our life because every second of our day is depreciating how much more time we have left. No matter how much money you have, time is something you will never get back. There are no do overs and it is probably the most volatile investments in your life. I say that because you will not always be spending your time wisely and if you are, you are unsure if the time spent on something is amounting to the expected end goal. For some reason we tend to have a very common saying:

“I just don’t have enough time” or “Sorry I have just been so busy”

the world

There can be multiple reasons for this, one were devoting our time to things we do not actually enjoy or does not add value to us(aka – lying in bed looking at memes). Second, were trying to take part in an activity but really we do not want to commit, so the response when asked is, “there just is not enough time or sorry I have just been so busy”. Personally, I have done both of these activities SO MUCH in my life and now I just try not to say i just did not have time but rather I will try my best to be honest with myself.

When I say that we are devoting our time to activities we do not really care about it can mean a number of things. For example, how many times have you been dragged out to do something with a friend that you REALLY had no reason to go to. Like going to a bar with your friend because THEY want company there or accompanying a friend somewhere that THEY need to go to not you or joining something that THEY are committing to but you just want to feel included like dance classes, spanish classes, music lessons. This is something that I was trying to do alot of in university and even now I will still find myself doing that sometimes.

One you tend to waste your money, time and you lose your sense of self. As you start getting more involved with different things you will come to a realization as one point that none of these things have any meaning to you. SO I would ask that maybe you think about what you possibly might like and if it aligns with what others are doing than kudos you have a friend to do it with. On the later though if you are doing all these random things with your friends you might actually be able to find something you really enjoy and in that case stick to it and try not to let it fade away because of what is happening in your life. (MAKE TIME FOR IT) The way to do that is to prioritize your time which can be hard because your friends may be pulling you one way but learning to prioritize is important and a very good skill to grasp as early as you can.

Now making commitments to an activity or task you are saying you will do is important. That will show that you are serious and you will not be able stray away from it. Otherwise you will continue to push it off further and further until you just decide to forget about it. That is actually something that our mind will do as a protective mechanism. If we try to do something outside of our comfort zone at first we will be extremely excited but if we do not act quick enough, our mind will start to shift and give you a whole world of reasons not to go through with it.

So setting a deadline and the earlier the better of getting started is ideal. For example, I was contemplating on traveling alone for the longest time and I would always complain to people that I want to travel, I do not want to be here and the excuses my mind would give me well you are in school, it will be expensive, where would you even go alone, its dangerous etc. Then when I started working full time and had vacation time as soon as I booked my time offI had the urge to go to japan and before I knew it I had my flight booked literally 8 months before my vacation. Even then as I started getting closer I had thoughts of backing out but at that point I was so committed there was no backing out. That was the best decision of my life and I was so happy about it.

While we are on the topic I just want emphasize how important it is to not let fear dictate your action. There will always be that sense of fear when you want to do something but I 100% know that doing it vs just thinking about it will reduce the amount of regret in your life! Signing up for a marathon was the scariest thing ever as I could only run 5k and want to drop dead on the floor. However, thankfully I paid for it with no refunds possible so I had to work it out and there are zero regrets now.

Finally, just to reiterate this whole article, PLEASE DO NOT SAY I DO NOT HAVE TIME . Because if you really wanted to do it you would make time for it whether that being working a little less or taking time away from lying on the couch to watch tv. If you do need a little push make sure you surround yourself with people that are not dragging you to things that THEY want to do but rather pushing you to do what you told them you wanted to complete.

Now go do something you love today even if it is just for 5 minutes! Prove to yourself that there is time.

As always thank you so much for reading. Please let me know if this helped or if you do not agree with what I wrote. I would love to hear more perspectives.
